Custom stainless steel built in our Prospect workshop, from a single bracket to a full commercial fit-out.
BLV Engineering is a family-owned metal fabrication workshop in Prospect, Western Sydney, providing custom stainless steel fabrication across the entire Sydney metropolitan area. We specialise in 304 and 316 grade stainless steel welding, sheet metal fabrication, for commercial clients, manufacturers, builders and the general public.
Everything is fabricated in-house at 3/12 Stoddart Road, Prospect NSW 2148. You deal with the people doing the work.
Trusted by Sydney builders, manufacturers and homeowners since 1982
The Gambrill family has run BLV Engineering from Western Sydney for more than 40 years. In that time we’ve fabricated stainless steel for organisations including Linea Interiors, Q-Tech Australia, RBM Plastic Extrusions, Toshiba International, Chips Property Services, alongside thousands of one-off jobs for local trades and members of the public who just need something made properly.
What backs the work:
The stainless steel jobs Sydney clients bring us
Most people who call us are dealing with one of these:
We take all four. There’s no minimum job size. Small intricate work and large structural components are both handled from the same workshop, which is unusual, most Sydney fabricators pick one end of that range.

304 or 316? Choosing the right stainless steel grade
Grade 304 stainless steel suits most indoor and general-purpose applications. Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which gives it far better resistance to chlorides, salt, pool chemicals and harsh cleaning agents. The practical rule for Sydney:
| Environment | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor commercial kitchens, benches, general fabrication | 304 | Cost-effective, excellent corrosion resistance in dry and clean-water environments |
| Coastal Sydney, marine, pool surrounds, external balustrades | 316 | Airborne salt from the Pacific attacks 304 — chloride pitting shows as brown staining within months |
| Food and chemical processing, wash-down areas | 316 | Handles aggressive cleaning chemicals and repeated sanitation |
| Structural and heavy sections | 304 / coated carbon steel | Depends on load, budget and exposure — worth a conversation |
Surface finishes and corrosion resistance
The finish isn’t cosmetic, it’s part of how stainless resists corrosion. A rougher surface holds contaminants and moisture, which is where pitting starts.
After welding, we recommend pickling and passivation on any stainless that will live in a wet, food or coastal environment. Welding leaves heat tint and disrupts the chromium oxide layer that makes stainless “stainless”. Pickling removes the tint and passivation restores that protective layer. Skipping it is why welded stainless sometimes rusts along the weld line and nowhere else.
How to get a stainless steel fabrication quote
- Send us what you have. Drawings, a DXF, a photo of the broken part, or a sketch with dimensions. Our quote form accepts file uploads.
- We review and come back to you. If the drawing raises questions on grade, thickness, tolerance or finish, we’ll ring you rather than guess.
- You get a fixed quote with a lead time.
- We fabricate it in Prospect and you collect, or we arrange delivery across Sydney.
Turnaround depends on material availability and complexity, a simple bracket or repair can often be done same week, larger fabrications are scheduled against your program. Tell us your deadline up front, if we can’t hit it, we’ll say so.

Stainless steel fabrication FAQs
How much does stainless steel fabrication cost in Sydney?
Stainless steel fabrication is quoted per job rather than by a fixed rate, because cost is driven by grade, thickness, the amount of welding and finishing, and quantity. Grade 316 typically costs noticeably more than 304, and mirror polishing adds more again. Send BLV Engineering a drawing or sketch through the quote form and you’ll get a fixed price with a lead time at no cost.
Do you take small stainless steel jobs?
Yes. BLV Engineering services the general public as well as commercial and industrial clients, and there is no minimum job size. Single brackets, one-off repairs and small spot welding jobs are all welcome alongside larger fabrication contracts.
Can you weld stainless steel to mild steel?
Yes — stainless steel can be welded to mild steel using an appropriate filler such as a 309-series consumable. It’s a common requirement on brackets and support structures. Be aware that the mild steel component will still corrode, so the joint usually needs coating or protection depending on where it’s installed.
Why is my stainless steel rusting?
Stainless steel most often rusts because of surface contamination from carbon steel — free iron particles picked up from shared grinding discs, brushes or workbenches — or because heat tint from welding was never removed. Both are preventable by keeping stainless fabrication separate from carbon steel work and by pickling and passivating after welding.
Can you work from my drawings or CAD files?
Yes. BLV Engineering fabricates from CAD files, DXF exports, engineering drawings, PDFs, sketches with dimensions, or an existing sample part. The quote form accepts up to five file uploads at 256MB.
Do you offer laser cutting for stainless steel?
Laser cutting, water jet cutting, machining, polishing and galvanising are arranged through long-standing partner suppliers, and managed by BLV Engineering as part of your job. Fabrication, welding, guillotining, folding and rolling are all completed in-house at the Prospect workshop.
